Morocco Faces Ongoing Challenges After Recent and Past Earthquakes

Early today, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Ksar el Kebir in northern Morocco, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. The tremors were felt up to 200 km away, including in Rabat. As of now, there are no official reports of casualties.

This event follows a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on September 8, 2023, near the town of Oukaïmedene in western Morocco. That quake resulted in more than 2,900 fatalities and over 5,500 injuries, causing significant damage to infrastructure and homes.

In the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake, reconstruction efforts have been ongoing. However, progress has been slow, with reports indicating that only about 1,000 of the 55,000 homes under reconstruction have been rebuilt as of September 2024. Many affected residents continue to live in temporary shelters, facing challenges such as extreme weather conditions.

The Moroccan government has pledged substantial funds for reconstruction and has been providing financial aid to affected families. Additionally, the European Union has offered €200 million to assist with post-earthquake reconstruction efforts.
