Morocco takes over presidency over Union for the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly

Morocco, through the Speaker of the House, Rachid Talbi Alami, has officially took over the presidency over the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), Wednesday in Strasbourg, with an ambitious vision of boosting and bolstering the multilateral cooperation between Europe and the Mediterranean partner countries.

The presidency handover took place during a meeting of the Mediterranean delegation, attended by Rachid Talbi Alami, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and her Vice-President, Pina Picierno, in addition to several European parliamentary officials.

The new Parliamentary Assembly President, Rachid Talbi Alami, took the occasion to elaborate on the political priorities of the Moroccan presidency and the agenda it is willing to implement. The objective, he explained, is to provide the Union with sustainable development solutions which can have tangible results on the ground.

Other priorities, Alami added, include food and water security, the fight against climate change, and energy security among others. When it comes to socio-economic challenges, the Speaker of the House expressed the willingness of the Moroccan presidency to tackle youth employability, inclusive growth, and the empowerment of women.

Alami recalled the main security challenges facing the Union today, notably the degenerating security situation in the Sahel, the peace process in Libya, the situation in Syria and Palestine, in addition to all the migration flows that ensued from multiple crises over the last few years.

During his visit to Strasbourg, Alami seized the opportunity to meet with the European Parliament President and multiple parliamentary officials, including chairs of many parliamentary groups and committees.
