Despite the extension of Morocco’s vaccination campaign to the 25-29 age group of the population, Morocco continues to record breaking numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases
Morocco’s Ministry of Health announced 6,971 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Morocco on July 27, 2021. In addition, the ministry noted 2,690 recoveries and 27 deaths.
The number of confirmed cases is a drastic increase from July 26, which saw 2,205 new cases in 24 hours.
In the official COVID-19 report, the ministry added that Morocco has recorded a total of 588,448 COVID-19 cases since the early days of the pandemic in early 2020. The kingdom has also recorded a cumulative 9,638 deaths and 549,116 recoveries.
Of the cases recorded, 746 were severe, 20 required emergency ventilation, and 393 required additional oxygen. The statement did not mention the status of Moroccan hospitals due to the growing number of daily cases.
Casablanca and the surrounding region maintains the record for most new cases in 24 hours with 2,834 cases and 6 deaths in 24 hours. Following Casablanca, the Marrakech-Safi region has recorded 1,088 new cases and 4 deaths.
Other regions such as Souss-Massa, home to the tourist hub Agadir, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Beni Mellal-Khenifra, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima have recorded more than 300 new cases while smaller municipalities such as Draa-Tafilalet, Oujda, Guelmim, Fes-Meknes, and Morocco’s most southern territories have recorded between 100 and 300 cases each.
Morocco extended its vaccination campaign to individuals aged 25 and older on July 26 as the kingdom continues to receive vaccine shipments from international partners such as the US and China.
As of July 27, Morocco tested 38,273 people in 24 hours and has performed 6,821,510 tests overall.
The kingdom’s COVID-19 mortality rate dropped to 1.6% from the previous day’s rate of 1.7%. The recovery rate has also decreased from 94% to 93.3%.
Moroccan authorities have been enforcing the COVID-19 preventative measures such as wearing a mask in public and respecting the 11 p.m nightly curfew. Many residents had begun to ignore the Ministry of Health’s safety precautions, prompting a new campaign on Moroccan state media and television services.
A message in Arabic reads “COVID-19 is still a danger” on many of the kingdom’s official websites and news outlets.
